Overview
WHOIS is a tool that is used to look up domain name in more than one server databases. The WHOIS service provides a means for searching on the domain name. To use WHOIS for a domain name search, simply type in the domain name you are looking for. This domain name must be a second-level domain, for example "example.com". Domain names with a "www" or third-level domains like "my.example.com" are not contained within WHOIS. WHOIS will only search for domain names and handles. If the domain you are searching for cannot be located in InterNIC WHOIS database, WHOIS will access the Shared Registry System and the WHOIS services of other remote registrars to satisfy the domain name search.
